With a degree in Jewellery Design, Jessica Dias founded Jé Wellery while she was still an undergraduate, in an endeavour to bring nature, material and the body closer together. Drawing on organic textures and forms that defy regularity, her work transforms material through manual gestures, allowing chance and imperfections to feature in her artistic language.
Between what nature offers and what craftsmanship is capable of revealing, Jé Wellery builds an intimate narrative, where each piece finds not only its place on the wearer’s skin, but also a form of existence.

Maria Machado: Jé Wellery originated from a desire to combine organic shapes and textures with precious metals. What do you look for in natural forms, and how do you transform this inspiration from nature into such a personal artistic language?
Jéssica Dias: Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a very close relationship with nature. I used to spend my summers camping with my family, I was a Girl Scout, and I’ve always loved observing my surroundings. It’s a connection that remains present in my life and which has ended up being reflected in my work, almost intuitively. When I’m looking for inspiration for a new collection, it’s often the textures that first spark my interest – in a rock, in the sand, in water, or on a surface that piques my curiosity. I like to explore and reinterpret them through metal, without seeking to directly reproduce nature, but by capturing what draws me to it in the first place. I’m very interested in that contrast between the organic and the body: taking irregular shapes, textures and small details and bringing them to a scale closer to the skin. I feel that it's this process of transformation that allows me to build a language that is truly my own.

All your pieces are handcrafted. What role do gesture, imperfection and chance play in your creative process?
My creative process relies heavily on unpredictability. I don’t usually work from a fixed design, because the forms often emerge at the very moment I’m bringing the object to life. I start with an idea, but I gradually discover the piece as I work on it. Because the forms are so organic, I like the process to remain open and allow the material space to surprise me. Sometimes I start with a very specific idea but the piece ends up taking a completely different path. Then, at other times, I find what I had envisioned but continue to explore further until I discover a new nuance. That’s why gesture and chance play such an important role in my work. Imperfection is also part of this process, not as something that I try to correct, but as a natural consequence of working by hand and allowing each piece to discover its own form.

You set up your own brand while still studying for your degree. At what point did you realise that you weren’t just creating jewellery, but building an artistic identity – and what does it mean to you to have your name associated with each piece?
During my degree, I was set a project in which I needed to create a collection comprising at least 20 pieces. It was through this exercise that I began to realise just how intuitively the textures of nature surfaced in my work. Based on a particular texture, I explored different shapes and forms – earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings – until I ended up creating a larger collection than I’d been asked for. It was a challenge, both creatively and in terms of production, but in the end I felt I’d surpassed my own expectations. It was that collection, created whilst I was still at university, that ended up giving rise to my brand. Having my name associated with the pieces therefore carries a very special meaning. It means taking responsibility for the entire process, from the initial idea to the finished piece, but also recognising that each one carries a little of who I am and how I see the world. It's very special to think that it all began with a university project and that, eight years down the line, some of those early pieces are still part of the brand’s history.
