Surrounded by olive groves, among fields and hills planted with vineyards, this property in Sonoma, California, is a reflection of communal living, based on a sophisticated rurality. Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer are known as the Hommeboys, the multifunctional design studio that works natural materials with taste and timelessness. This house embodies the preferences of the creative duo and what defines their work: a thoughtful aesthetics and enduring design. “Our design aesthetic is naturally mixed with rich colours and unique architectural details. We wanted to bring an earthy feel to a small space and infuse it with an energy that is relaxing, inviting and visually stimulating. Almost everything in the house, from the furniture to the lighting, is vintage or designed and built by us or other manufacturers we know”, the couple explains.
The main challenge of the project, “and also the most fun aspect, was to tackle the uninspiring architecture” from an old, abandoned barn. The classic format of the space was adapted to the couple's needs and bit by bit it has expanded in an eclectic and cosy way. The latest renovation, the most important of them all, involved remodelling their studio showroom on the ground floor, which took six months to carry out. The duo added curves and arches to the rectangles that shape the first and second floors, as a way of framing and separating the spaces, creating an unexpected experience that entices you to explore. Fun rooms with character represent exactly what was expected: “In the Hommeboys’ house, the lifestyle is one of partying and hard work. The coffee table serves either as a dining spot or as a dance platform, the dining table is a gaming table of epic proportions, and the lower level is a sophisticated office that's cosy and efficient.”
