Through an accumulation of voids, stories multiply and a space is created “for meditation and balance”, bringing alchemy to modern life.
With the absence of noise, space is provided for the truly essential. Scattered textures and stories permeate the subdued light that fills the interior of this house, built over 25 years ago close to Lake Avandaro, in the northern zone of Valle de Bravo, two hours away from Mexico City. To celebrate and to contemplate are verbs frequently used in this home. A simple, essentially warm beauty reverberates in every part of this project signed by Mariana Morales, who is primarily responsible for the serene nature of this haven “that helps us reconnect and escape the pressures of professional life.”
It wasn’t a simple challenge. Located on an uneven and compartmentalised plot, the owners envisaged “a refreshing house, with up-to-date finishes, that could accommodate more frequent visitors while retaining the atmosphere of a weekend hideaway.” After opening up windows and removing old walls, the Mexican architect then instilled the home with her personal aesthetic, enhancing the fluidity of the space by adding a pair of 20-metre-high columns uniting the two floors of the property. Transferring the private areas of the home to its upper floor, she decided to maintain the house’s centre of gravity on the ground floor, using a painting by the Mexican artist Beatriz Zamora to reveal the open space that interconnects the kitchen, living room and dining room – a place where the landscape filters through the home’s translucent surfaces.

In partnership with the Habitación 116 studio, she acknowledges that the “trust and creative freedom” granted by the client were fundamental to the creation of warm atmospheres, dominated by soft vegetation, perfectly balanced with the setting in which it is located, and by the neutral tones and raw materials, such as wood, linen, stone or micro cement flooring.
