This home, on Manhattan’s West Side, provides irrefutable proof that “our roots will always be present deep inside us”.
A refuge “from the metropolis of glass and concrete”. This is how Andre Mellone describes how his subconscious designed this eclectic and sentimental composition. As both the owner of this home and interior designer, he philosophically describes how this two-bedroom apartment in New York’s Chelsea neighbourhood “has lived through financial crises, blackouts, relationships, floods and hurricanes”, revealing that this is the fourth version of its interiors. The Brazilian designer thinks of renovations as stages of life. As long as his business – Studio Mellone – continues to thrive and mature, this evolution will also be reflected in the way he expresses himself as a person, leading to a transformation driven by the “present moment”.
The home with its four-metre double-height ceilings – consisting of two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, living room and dining room – with a concept that resists labelling, where there was creative freedom to “try out ideas, without fear of making mistakes”. Here, a mingling of eras characterises the pieces of furniture and decorative objects that the designer has accumulated over the years. In the open-plan living room, different textures of wood and natural fibres can be seen in the pieces surrounded by a palette of neutral tones and complemented with ochres and greens – that allow the antique decorative elements and the contemporary pieces to express themselves, like the Robsjohn-Gibbings lampshades, the African mahogany stool and chair by the Green River Project and the dark side tables by Rick Owens.

Moving on, in a more artistic vein, there are pieces of furniture also created by the designer himself. The bookcase that accommodates the magazines, the restoration of the old sofas and the new green velvet upholstery of the 1920s Pierre Chareau bed, reinforce the comfort and the authenticity of this residence.
