Attitude 119: Texture

  • September is a month that is synonymous with a certain stillness and new beginnings, albeit it at more restrained speeds, but in which transformations also take place.
That’s why, in this edition, we’ve allowed ourselves to be taken on a journey through liberating textures, with material elements that appeal to the senses and embody other dimensions, and with them, we’ve dictated the end of plain walls. A watershed where appearances mirror different individualities, with life and intensity, in palettes that take on different forms. Whether it’s through the expression and coarseness of a brushstroke, the interweaving of the threads of a fabric, the warmth of a house or the aridity of a landscape.
  • The eclectic choices featured in this issue are a reflection of this: the pieces crafted for hours on end by Sofie Aaldering, a young Dutch artist who has won us over by giving shape to ideas through the exploration of textiles, or even the Rolex Tower, the creation of the Curiosity office, which reveals the mastery of the famous Swiss brand’s mechanisms but on a new scale, mirrored in a story told across the four floors of the latest store in Ginza, Japan.
  • There was also scope for inspiring conversations with different personalities working in different fields, such as Nuno Nunes-Ferreira in his exhibition curated by Verónica de Mello, in a ‘kaleidoscopic’ and expressive portrait of social and cultural realities altered by the Revolution of 25 April 1974, manifesting his art and approach to living into a real and palpable language.
  • If we think about it on a basic level, textures are tactile or perceptible surfaces that float in the particles of a body or substance, tangible through the variations inherent to the matter they are made of: rough, satiny or matt… Materials that conduct us through their density and consistency, generating sensations when we touch or look at them.
  • Curiously, and as a result of an exercise in contradiction, the graphic language of this issue has led us to a plastic exploration of textures, using Artificial Intelligence, through figurative work as the backdrop and guiding thread of our articles. The best thing is to realise how the textures invade us and make us stop and feel, in moments that heighten our thinking. And there is a serene magic in these moments, with whisperings of parallel worlds that we hope you will discover over the next few pages, in a fusion of layers that mould us and belong to us.
