Attitude 109: Positive
-
It was only narrowly that we didn’t make it, that we didn’t fulfil that dream or that we didn’t visit that place. It was only by a hair’s breadth that we weren’t happy. How many times have we anticipated the worst case scenario, allowed ourselves to become complacent or been held back by the fear of never achieving the desired result?

Despite all the assumptions that prevent us from embracing our days with greater intensity, we welcome 2023 with a message of optimism, trying to spark in our readers the same sense of enthusiasm and hope that these projects have generated in us. Fortunately, there are plenty of examples of this contagious energy: in Mallorca, designer Adriana Meunié uses materials such as wool, broom or raffia to create natural sculptures capable of transforming any space into a cosy art gallery. On the other side of the Atlantic, in New York, the American studio Post Company has also bowled us over with its delicacy and gracefulness, creating houses and hotels whose beauty translates into quality of life for all who use them. But we don’t even need to wander so far away – in Lisbon, the artist Cristina Ataíde demonstrates her fascination for nature in sculptures that genuinely trigger joy and buoyancy.

We didn’t leave it at that and took advantage of the approaching New Year to revamp our visual identity, making it more contemporary and appealing, while still avoiding conformity to major trends or conventional practice. In the light of the current crisis faced by the printing industry, we have also invested in a new type of paper designed to preserve the quality and boldness of each publication. Now more than ever, we want to continue focusing on the unique experience of leafing through this physical object, offering moments of sheer relaxation that cannot be matched by the sensations produced by digital formats.

For this very same reason, don’t be surprised to discover new names for our customary suggestions for destinations, designers and other creatives. Under the new sections Explore, Meet and Portfolio, we will continue to provide you not only with good tips about shops, galleries, hotels and restaurants, but also with a selection of inspiring conversations with artists from different disciplines and generations. Finally, we inaugurate our brand new section Profile, in which we interview Mário Azevedo and Paula Ferreira Alves, founders of INAIN studio, creating a new editorial space that explores the work of small and large entrepreneurs in greater depth and detail.

In a world that is so often uncertain and distressing, we insist on valuing a particular approach: to look at life with more hope and optimism, providing an honest, plural and always inspiring discourse. A message that acquires a marked strength in our regular Mood section, where we offer a note of positivity to all our readers, and which perfectly encapsulates the aim of an edition that is particularly geared towards creative, luminous, generous and militant people.
Just as the designer Anthony Ingrao reminded us in this issue (page 68), “as long as we are open to embracing a new direction in our lives, we will always be ready to create. Without that change, the world would be a boring place.” By allowing ourselves to contemplate the beautiful, we create space for new ideas, possibilities, achievements and emotions.
