Overlooking the Gulden Bodem Nature Park, this early 20th century house had long been coveted by the current owners, who happened to live nearby. When the property came on the market, they didn’t have any doubts – the house represented the promise of a dream and the definitive destination for a growing family.
Designed and built in 1933 by the Buvani architectural practice was originally intended to be a work and living space. The four-storey house stands out with Amsterdam School influences apparent in the slatted façade, the window frames and the opulent stained-glass windows. From the outset, the need to integrate three fundamental aspects became clear: paying homage to the building’s history, elevating the dialogue with the surrounding natural landscape and redefining comfortable contemporary living.
The interior design project proved to be unique thanks to the collaborative approach involving two interior design offices: the duo from Hum Studio & Gallery, based in Lisbon and Amsterdam, Thijs van der Stel from Wonderstruck in Amsterdam, and the owners themselves. This dynamic brings with it a story that adds to the original project. Since 2015, Carla (Hum Studio) and Thijs have worked together in the design studio of Marcel Wanders and Nicemakers, subsequently collaborating on various projects. This led to their to a natural and fruitful approach thanks to their innovative and complementary visions.

One of their main concerns was to develop a space that was carefully designed to meet the needs of family life and each of its members in particular. The ground floor and the garden are the areas dedicated to family life. They’ve been designed so that the parents can enjoy a place to relax, listen to music or simply contemplate the view over the natural park, with the Zen Room being one of the favourite areas of the house. On the same floor, the living room provides a space for meeting and sharing, both because of the morning sunlight, the cosy sofa and the connection to the children’s playroom.

The villa has been designed to reflect the lifestyle and personality of its occupants, as well as to celebrate the uniqueness and harmony between the interior and exterior, be it the garden designed by Donders en van der Heiden or the surrounding natural park.
