Unusual as a whole and reflecting the local geomorphological profile, ‘Casa na Costa do Castelo’ extends and unfolds as we climb upwards.
Located right in the heart of the Portuguese capital, in the curious street that is its namesake, "Casa na Costa do Castelo" is part of an urban fabric firmly rooted in local characteristics. The Rua Costa do Castelo circumscribes the hill of S.o Jorge Castle at a significantly lower level than its ramparts. As such, this project by the Bak Gordon Arquitectos studio, as he himself reiterates, is a reflection of this condition: "Its vertical layout, conquering height until it reaches the base of the castle wall, is a response to the shape of the plot (being deeper than it is wide), but also to the narrowness of the street".
The project included the construction of an entirely new and particularly unique house. The first four floors are aligned with the other historic buildings found on the street. The fifth floor, however, is closer to the language of a house. Unfettered by morphological restrictions and enhanced by the void reserved for exterior spaces up to the castle ramparts, it has more depth than the others, and is set back from the line of the façade.
