A beach house that celebrates the local culture. This is the latest design project from the Susan Marinello Interiors studio in Los Cabos, Mexico.
From Seattle to El Dorado Club, this summer house is an extension of the Mexican beaches in its tranquillity and joy, colours, textures, and breathtaking views. Close to the cities of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, this American family's residence has two floors, with a rooftop on the upper floor.

In the interior design project, Susan Marinello and her team kept the house's centrepieces in neutral tones, using natural materials like wood. This approach allowed the studio to create various ‘blank’ spaces, making it easy to combine textures, materials, and decorative elements that reflected the region's culture.

Much of the furniture in the project was customised and carefully selected for this house. “We hand selected a Parota wood slab for the dining table, a native wood species in Mexico. Seagrass & rope materials were selected to add texture to area rugs, ottomans and lamps,” explains Susan, the designer behind the project.

The large, modern space acts as a gallery, highlighting the bold patterns and fabrics of the supporting decorative pieces, such as the cushions, stools, and pouffes. For the sofa and complementary seating, the team opted once again for neutral materials to highlight the vibrant colours of the works of art and the different decorative elements.

As owners who value art, the clients played an essential role in finding pieces that were local or had some connection to Mexico. “The large piece in the living room is by a local artist named Frank Arnold and we were able to visit his studio in San Jose Del Cabo to view and select from his vast array of work,” says Susan. “We were inspired by the breadth of creativity shown by skilled artisans found in places like Mexico City and Oaxaca and selected handmade light fixtures to add the character of hand-touched work throughout the home.” The design team wanted to celebrate and pay homage to the local culture in every room by selecting some of the region's characteristic elements.

Designed for a large family who loves to host family and friends at home, this project is all about bare feet, a bikini on your body, and a smile on your face while staying in touch with the best of nature – the beach.
