Surrounded by the untamed, verdant beauty of Trás-os-Montes we find Holly Niemela and Édouard Payen’s paradise.
They’ve been together for 20 years and in 2015 they bought this property in the north of Portugal. “It was the place that found us”, Holly says with rapture.
What could otherwise have remained as a private retreat became Tinhela610. Together with the architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade, the owners embarked on na eight-year project full of resilience, which manifests itself as the closing of a cycle and na ambition for a sustainable and ecological lifestyle. Designed to recreate synergies through retreats, artistic and cultural residencies, they strive for organic growth, “allowing the energy of the space to flow and thrive.”
With a combined 50 years’ experience in the area of well-being, the couple offer an immersive, sensory experience that brings a sense of calm. The splendour and spirit of the place leads us to an inner encounter, in a powerful (re)connection in an oasis at the heart of mystical nature, which lulls us with the sound of water in the background.
From the old mill (Mill A), where there is a childcare area and access to the Fairyland Tent and the Stairway to Heaven platform, we follow the boardwalk lulled by the rhythms of the River Tinhela. Growing from Roman ruins, wooden cabins emerge to accommodate up to 14 guests. The terraces descend to the Mill Be, where ancient meditation techniques that awaken the senses are explored. We continue on to the Field of Dreams, which presents us with the surrounding water fountain.

The Japanese-inspired bath and sauna room, influenced by Holly’s Finnish roots, prompts us to reflect on water conservation. The dining room is about sharing, and each meal is prepared with feelings and flavour, straight from the land to the table.
