They breathe new life into old buildings with precocious good taste and a distinctive aesthetic. Spending their time between Menorca and Barcelona, Benito Escat and Pol Castells display an irreverent approach, while maintaining a profound respect for the region's history and resources.
With an impressive portfolio that ranges from residential to retail and hotel projects, these young designers create classic and provocative environments, demonstrating why they are one of the most sought-after studios in the country.
Inês Graça: What are your "golden rules" when developing each project?
Quintana Partners: We don't have a "golden rule"; we like to follow our intuition. We believe we have a style that is thoughtful, edgy, creative and connected to the land. Our great passion is getting to know our new clients and making them feel good in their homes. We are a little bit like ‘psychologists’, we need to understand how each person lives and wants to live within the project.
IG: You also have an additional interest in reusing old materials. Is this a premise that permeates all your work?
QP: We know it's impossible to reclaim all materials because we always strive for a certain sophistication, a certain refinement. Nevertheless, we try to reuse as many materials as possible, or use new certified materials that have been through a more environmentally-friendly process. We also make use of second-hand pieces, as there is a huge antiques market. In addition, we work with LEED certification.
IG: In terms of materials, do you have any preferences?
QP: We love to work with natural materials but we don't like it when they appear ‘too natural’ (such as faux wood or marble). We also adapt our materials according to the region of the project, so we do a lot of work with local artisans who help us develop a more interesting approach that blends in with the local culture. In Menorca, for example, we have a craftsman who supplies us with terracotta or handmade tiles for the flooring.

IG: Menorca most certainly has its own specific characteristics. Is it a challenge to design on the island?
QP: The island is quite small, with limited resources, and practically everything has to be imported. But we also have to be very creative, use our imagination, and reuse materials for other purposes.
