Every decision taken in the regeneration of the buildings that would become the ZOLAND·Emei Resort aimed to bridge the gap between architecture and nature. Rather than imposing a new presence, this project by Studio J. Bridgland (SJB) has created a place where the architecture practically disappears, giving centre stage to the landscape.

Set within the mountainous landscape of Emei, China, this boutique retreat accompanies the natural slope of the hillside, recalling small stone villages that seem to have grown organically out of the mountain.

The materials chosen also reinforce this sense of continuity. Schist from Mount Emei, traditional grey tiles from Leshan, cedar wood and local reddish-hued stone introduce a sensory dimension that emphasises texture, ageing and authentic character.

The central courtyard serves as the heart of the complex. It is here that an ancient Zhennan tree, protected as the focal point of the design, represents a symbolic link between the past and the present, becoming the quiet axis around which the whole resort experience revolves.
