Designed to be a "home away from home", Saboaria Boutique Hotel Porto was born next to the building that once housed the iconic Saboaria do Bolhão. Preserving its history, this boutique hotel combines the art of hospitality with both physical and mental well-being.
Located in the heart of Porto, just a few steps from the famous Avenida dos Aliados, Saboaria Boutique Hotel doesn't want to be just a place to pass through, but a haven of peace for all those who visit Invicta. In an analogy to the old Bolhão Soap Shop, TAMAR group teamed up with NN Arquitectura, NANO design and Studio Eduardo Aires to jointly create a space that values local and artisanal production and invites people to disconnect.
Home away from home
With 28 rooms, fully equipped with maximum comfort and functionality, the 5-star boutique hotel combines the embrace of home with a constant feeling of serenity. Spread over three floors and with seven different room types, their areas vary between 30m2 and 75m2 - some rooms have a large living room, a balcony overlooking the garden or even a jacuzzi.
Equipped with a kitchenette and utensils, air conditioning, phone, TV and Wi-Fi, all the rooms also have a yoga mat so that guests can enjoy pure moments of calm and tranquility.
In the centre of the garden, SPA Saboaria is one of the project's pillars. A true temple of relaxation, its aim is to energise visitors through biocosmetics, phytotherapy and aromatherapy, offering a sensory experience based on natural and ancestral practices. The massages, adapted to different purposes, vary between facial, body and signature treatments. With a jacuzzi area and a Turkish bath, the Saboaria SPA embraces the garden and the heated outdoor swimming pool, transforming it into an oasis.
Historic building and serene interiors
Inspired by the history of the building, the founders of the TAMAR group wanted to transport the memory of this narrative up to date, coupling hospitality with an organic and unfussy aesthetic.
The starting point for the project was the consolidation of the façades and structural walls of the buildings, explains Miguel Nogueira from NN Arquitectura. "There was already a third floor in this structure at street level, so we exploited that fact to extend it across the entire building, bearing in mind the city-facing front and the building’s relationship with its neighbours," says the architect. The existing materials drove the rest of the narrative: the black and white hydraulic mosaic in the bathrooms and at the entrances to some of the rooms was inspired by one of the original floors, as was the colour of the wood - a kind of light green - which was taken from the old joinery.
The unshowy interior design featuring primarily calm tones, such as greens, browns and whites, combines with the hardwood of the cupboards and the old console tables carefully selected by NANO Design. The latter also chose materials such as linen, terracotta and whicker to add warmth.
The commitment to local artists and partners makes this Boutique Hotel a special place. The common area has a small corner of Portuguese products, selected by Filipa Alves, from Florida Studio.
As well as offering cultural and wellness activities, such as pottery and soap workshops, music sessions and wine tastings, Saboaria Boutique Hotel Porto will be opening a new restaurant soon.
