Shaped by the desert landscape in southern Baja California, Mexico, the Paradero hotel emerges from a unique ecosystem that absorbs and integrates the surrounding space in an articulation of the place.
The dialogue between the natural world and concrete embraces a set of compact volumes that enclose a central courtyard and opens out onto its surroundings, in a reinterpretation of the architecture of the 18th century Californian Mission, built by Spanish Jesuits and Franciscan monks. Designed by Rubén Valdez and Yshar Yektajo, the hotel’s project revolves around the spatial logic of monasteries, seeking a balance between individual and collective life.
Here, days are experienced at leisure and independently, as each suite is isolated and autonomous. Meals and the check-in area take place outdoors, like other facilities for the guests. The elevated swimming pool looks out over the cactus and mountain scenery, extending over a half-moon deck to enjoy the surrounding nature that merges into the paths that wind through the Paradero.

Built in locally sourced beige concrete, mixed and moulded by hand, the volumes have been accentuated with details provided by wood, iron and hand-woven textiles, providing a rough, tactile finish in an exercise that extends and preserves the beauty of the desert.
