Located in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Hotel Hello Plovdiv is a new project from the Simples studio. With a minimalist design inspired by the city's timeless architecture, this is a clean and contemporary space for rest.
In one of Plovdiv's most central neighbourhoods, the old Hotel Nord recently underwent a complete refurbishment by Bulgarian architecture studio Simples. Through this project, the designers established a conceptual link between the building and its urban context and modernised its aesthetics to reflect the values of the new brand.
Preserving the original geometry of the façade, white was the tone chosen for the building - it lightens its heavy appearance, dominated by solid, glazed walls - creating a highlight in the neighbourhood. The vertical aluminium profiles give it depth and dynamism, helping break up the previously felt monotony. Also, on the outside, articulated panels are planned to be included in front of the windows to filter the light into the interior and improve the composition of the façade. In the courtyard, the feeling of spaciousness is reinforced by replacing the old roof with glass, thus allowing for a lighter, more open atmosphere.
The timeless architecture of old Plovdiv served as inspiration for the interior design. The light tones and dominant white colour help to visually expand the spaces, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere throughout the hotel. Making the most of the light, the interior was designed as a large, monochrome space with interesting dynamic contrasts achieved through various textures.
The surfaces vary from smooth to highly textured, referencing the local syenite stone - which forms the city's hills. The floor and some pieces of furniture are made from traditional lime mortar, a material that dates back to the Roman and Byzantine eras - a tribute to Plovdiv's architectural heritage.
