Enter the palpable haven of Black Diamond — the YSG Studio project that has transformed a grey three-storey family home in Mosman — a suburb of Sydney — into a tactile paradise with spaces that flow and ebb freely. Entering this home is like taking a deep, exhilarating dive into a universe with an intensity enriched by tones and substance, but devoid of excessive trimmings. The colours, textures, patterns and materials envelop us and swirl around us, creating environments that offer instant absorption, and where touch plays a crucial role in the selection of the textiles and finishes, in order to nurture our relationship with the moment.
Yasmine Ghoniem, founder of YSG Studio, was the creative mind responsible for the project which, as requested by the clients, was meant to look like a boutique hotel and foster a sense of relaxation. The interiors reveal detailed attention to this brief, while the sense of arriving is felt right at the entrance with a glass-block wall that provides a sunny feel on cloudy days. It’s from this point onwards that the magic unfolds. Descending the stairs, the light wood steps shift to a stained ebony, announcing the transition to the living area, where an underwater-like world with splashes of petrol blue under an oatmeal-coloured ceiling stands out and creates a submarine scene. The kitchen island, with its shimmering black mosaics, rises up like a giant reef, and from here, the black mosaics extend across the floor, tracing a path along the room that lures you outside.
Descending one more level, the ceilings become light again, in the office and guest bedroom the floor transitions to clay and the teal tones shift to deep greens and ocean blues. Inside the master bedroom, the use of Travertino Rosso marble conjures up the sensation of being in a luxury retreat.
