Inaugurated in January, Sussurro is the result of the unique combination of the backgrounds of its founding partners. We’re talking about design, in the case of Sarah Birkett and conservation, in the case of Adam Humphreys.
Both are originally from Zimbabwe and have joined forces with the local community to create a unique hotel project, inviting us to experience a more meaningful and conscientious holiday, while enjoying a profound experience of nature. We are on the Nhamabue peninsula in southern Mozambique, near a peaceful lagoon of turquoise waters... An idyllic setting that provides the backdrop for six private bungalows, in a tangible dialogue with the outdoors, respecting vernacular Mozambican architecture. The chromatic options “have been dictated by the earth and natural materials used to build Mozambican homes”, says Sarah, providing the example of the walls, made with red sand from the coastal cliffs flanking the property and which lend warmth to the interiors.

Using a simple and unfussy language, each suite is decorated with furniture carved on site, displaying hand-made pieces that are perfectly enhanced by the bare walls. According to Sarah, it was imperative to extol and promote African craftsmanship, “in a world where the connection with the earth through craft is so rapidly discarded for machine made, imported and environmentally damaging products (such as plastic).” It also underlines the fact that artisans can see their work valued in situ, which is something that does not always happen.
