We're in Pacific Heights, San Francisco, California, next to some of the city's most vibrant neighbourhoods - Presidio Heights and Fillmore. The house, originally built in 1920, is a classic residential building in the locality.
After undergoing some interventions, namely being divided into two apartments and then operating as a single-family residence, the house was renovated in the early 2000s, leaving it completely uncharacterized, dated and cold.

Recently, Studio Plow took on a new transformation. The client, a young couple with a daughter, has different cultural backgrounds – he is American, and she was born and raised in Mexico – which was very important for the project's development. "With roots in Mexico, our client has a strong cultural connection to many of the pieces featured throughout the home," says Brit Epperson, founder of Studio Plow. "As a fashion enthusiast and art lover, her perspective was a key inspiration behind our selection of pieces."

Focus on arts and crafts
"So far, this has been the project that has required the most artistic involvement for us," says Brit Epperson. "The collaborations we developed with artists and artisans were fundamental to the final success. Selected pieces of art and furniture should have a story related to the owners, so downstairs, for example, in the games room, the raw cotton tapestry is made in Querétaro, Mexico, close to the house where the customer has grown."

Atmosphere
The result is a welcoming, light-filled home that reflects the owners' diverse heritage and accommodates their growing family. The house is spacious and inviting, in contrast to what living in a big city can sometimes be like.
The design focuses on creating a refuge, a retreat from urban life and a welcoming place for daily rituals.
Studio Plow balanced warm, bright tones and selected colour palettes for each space based on its function. For example, the living room features an extroverted palette anchored by the deep burgundy-coloured rug, giving it a more lively and social use. In contrast, the main suite features earthy, more introverted tones to bring a sense of grounding and calm, punctuated for textural moments with art.
Regarding the materials used, the studio opted for "natural materials that promoted a healthy environment and simultaneously luxurious, but resistant, such as wool carpets, marble and solid wood surfaces and recycled fabrics". The desire was to achieve a comfortable and beautiful environment but not too luxurious.
