In De Concessie, the protected coastal area of De Haan where Léon Ide’s interwar architecture shapes the landscape with a quiet elegance, Studio Pien has completed the renovation of a beach house that seems to have been waiting precisely for this gesture: a return to its own essence.
Restored for a family of five, the project avoids excess and instead seeks a subtle balance between memory, functionality and light. The building’s historical character has been honoured in every detail, from the original staircase – a delicate example of interwar craftsmanship – to the luminous proportions that guide the eye towards the dunes. The proximity of the sea becomes an active part of the interior narrative, and the view that floods the living space suggests a way of living that favours contemplation and a slower rhythm.
Within this setting, the new kitchen emerges contemporary yet restrained, designed with the same attention to handcraft that shaped the house’s past. Warm timber tones introduce an almost tactile softness, creating a gathering space that replaces entertainment with conviviality; there is no television, by deliberate choice. The house invites an unhurried, intimate daily life made of lingering breakfasts, shared cooking and quiet returns after walks along the beach.
Rather than overlaying modernity, Studio Pien chose to reveal what was already there, enhancing comfort without erasing history. The result is a home that breathes continuity: between past and present, between heritage protection and contemporary living, between the precision of the intervention and the lightness of the experience.
