With its view of the most sacred volcano in Bali, Indonesia – the Gunung Agung – and immersed in a vernacular setting through its design and materials, Villa Rumah Fajar expresses a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Balinese house. This project by Studio Jencquel illustrates how simplicity can be luxurious, and it happens to be the home of the studio's founder – Maximilian Jencquel – and his family.
On this hillside in Bali, the house adheres to the principles of vernacular architecture in a contemporary way, embracing its symbolism in keeping with Indonesian culture. Maximilian explains how "the presence of the volcano is reflected in the choice of the materials used", namely the "black volcanic stone, which represents an allegorical element of the built project", the "red brick reminiscent of lava" and the "façade with its charred wood , evocative of pyroclastic explosions". The owner also highlights "the choice of artwork in the living room – a rusty sheet of metal accidentally left behind in the building and which now decorates the wall".
