On the edge of Madrid’s largest green lung, this house is made of light and warmth. The original 1960s design has been remodelled by S+DLH into a luminous narrative of circuits.
The house rises on a square base plan with south-facing and north-facing windows. The structure of the original house was compromised by the building’s ventilation shaft in the centre, the presence of which needed to be taken into account. At the same time, several structural columns were identified that it was hoped could be concealed. The solution was to create an identifiable and aesthetically appealing unit built in wood that could accommodate the service area (bathrooms, storage and cellar), establishing its existence as an integral part of the house. This element, which is entirely clad in handmade Etimoe wood slats, begins by defining the organic character of the space. All the carpentry was made to measure and the slats that make up the volume were installed one by one over several weeks, so as not to detract from the verticality of the composition. The new design is characterised by the wooden cube, from which dynamic and flexible circulation routes emerge. Thanks to sliding doors, the rooms can be compartmentalised or opened up, separating public and private areas whenever desired. The light-coloured wooden floor softens the atmosphere, providing a visual balance.
