Gifted with a refined aesthetic sensibility, it’s through architectural photography that Francisco Nogueira combines a consistent background with an essentially global outlook. His fascination is expressed in the diversity of his portfolio that ranges from more idyllic destinations to images of ‘current architecture’, concerned with the spontaneous appropriation of space. With two published books and images regularly commissioned by the international press, the photographer- architect speaks to us of his ceaseless desire to immortalise – and humanise – each of his projects.

You started working as a photographer at the same time as you studied architecture. How did this passion come about?
Francisco Nogueira: I’ve always been passionate about photography, architecture came later, not as a definite vocation but, rather as a route necessary for the multitude of disciplines it covered. While I studied, my passion for architecture was obvious, but my enjoyment of the project process was less so. I did an internship at an architecture studio in Barcelona, where I ended up over- seeing the visual communication and photography side of things and, when I returned to Lisbon, I rented a studio in Alcântara that I shared with some friends. Over the years, I began to realise that what I was most interested in photography was photographing space: be it territory, architecture or interiors.
