A new paradigm of sustainable luxury in the Philippines: Lagen Island Resort, in El Nido, has just concluded a complete refurbishment by WATG and Wimberly Interiors.

Set amongst limestone cliffs and tropical forest, the project offers a hospitality experience steeped in the Philippine landscape and culture. This resort covers an area of over six hectares and comprises 42 accommodation units (including water-villas and forest rooms), as well as a spa, sunset bar, diving centre, chapel and an arrival hall
by the water.

WATG’s intervention – which included architecture, consultancy and planning – was based on a sensitive interpretation of the island’s natural topography, allowing the buildings to integrate organically into the surrounding landscape. The interiors, designed by Wimberly Interiors, further enhance this contextual narrative by celebrating traditional Filipino craftsmanship. The arrival hall draws inspiration from traditional Paraw boats, incorporating Sawali geometric patterns.

In the guest rooms and communal areas, natural materials and interwoven textures reinforce the connection to the local environment. Subtle references to the bahay kubo (the vernacular Filipino house) are reintroduced
