The main goal? To create a community space that can be fully enjoyed by locals, far from the adrenaline gushing through this port city.
Going down the main staircase that leads to the basement floor, we leave the hustle and bustle of the city of Xiamen behind us and are invaded by the sense of absolute tranquillity that reigns over each of the 750 square meters of this building. The absolute ability to disconnect, complemented by refined aesthetics, defines this project commissioned by the Zon Nhang group from Waterfrom Design office: an office within a housing complex, with a long-term plan to become a multi-functional community space.
Two key premises guided the studio's work: the creation of a place that can be sustainably enjoyed by its community and the ability to integrate it into the landscape itself, without neglecting continuous access to elements such as water, air and natural light. Focussing on safeguarding the region’s traditions, they team preserved the enormous tree standing in the central atrium that rises through the two floors (also an ancestral symbol of the meeting between communities), and rituals such as the tea tasting complemented by the sound of running water coming from the reservoir on the upper floor.
