Just a few minutes from the famous Rodeo Drive, Lloydcrest is the latest project from design studio OSKLO. Originally designed by Georgius Y. Canon in 1940, the house has retained the style of the time, with exuberant lines and shapes, after reconstruction.
Straight out of a ‘faraway place’ with a breathtaking view over Beverly Hills, Lloydcrest features the typical Californian architecture of the 1940s, so much appreciated by Michael Martin, co-founder of OSKLO and responsible for the project. “We wanted to reconstruct the house but at the same time maintain its look and pedigree”.
The reconstruction project saw the original doors kept, the bricks recovered, and other details duplicated or renovated. “Taking just over a year to remodel, the house, in its new form, is understated, elegant and refined”, says the designers.
With European and Japanese-inspired decor, the interiors are predominantly bright. “We stuck to classic variations of white but then added a few darker tones that lend a moodier feel”, says Michael. The designers chose to play with the use of different materials in the interior and exterior of the house: oak wood, white and grey marble, brick, and copper. “From colors to window details and molding choices, we really felt like the past offered most of our architectural answers,” says Arya, co-founder of OSKLO studio.
Michael and Arya were inspired by the countryside, characteristic of some European countries, and the Japanese aesthetic to furnish the property. They chose a Ralph Lauren bed in brown velvet and walnut bedside tables in the guest room, customised by OSKLO. The design duo managed to transform the office into a cosy and inviting space with the addition of a 19th-century Japanese desk and lounge chairs from the 60s. The living room has an Oliver Gustav sofa, perfect for relaxing and socialising with the family.
The double plot house has two floors, with the main bedrooms and kitchen on the upper floor, and a basement with a cinema room and a small office. Outside, the property has a large garden with bucolic inspirations, an art studio and a swimming pool. “Everything is surrounded in lush, mature greenery, especially after Los Angeles’ several years of above-average rainfall”.
The result of this remodelling is a modern house adapted to the Beverly Hills lifestyle, with touches that pay homage to the past and tradition.
