A house that, in its entirety, revisits the modern style of the 1950s.
More than simply being inspired, the owners of the Gloss residence have a real passion for mid-20th century architecture and design. Artistic movements such as Bauhaus and Futurism fostered an aesthetic focused on ergonomics and functionality, and these values were embraced by the Mid-Century Modern style, eternalised in American living in the 1950s, particularly in Palm Springs.
Now, wind forward, here in Australia, in Melbourne, Studio Doherty’s challenge was to design an inviting house that evoked the iconic and flamboyant elements of that period, so appreciated by these clients. The concept of spaciousness, with large rooms, glass partitioning replacing entire walls and gardens and verandas being a part of the family’s social life, are very evident in this project created for a young couple and their two dogs.
From the moment you enter, the spiral steel staircase and column, painted in an intense royal blue, highlight the eccentric features of this home. In the kitchen, the originality of the Dtile cladding — a system of flat tiles in combination with a variety of curved tiles — creates a shiny surface that reflects the rays of the setting sun and brightens up the entire open-plan layout of the living and dining area. This social sphere of the home, facing the terrace and private swimming pool, is united by a sloping, wood-panelled ceiling. Downstairs, an intricate approach to joinery, consisting of cut wood, mirrored laminate, steel rods and hanging shelves, sets the tone for the study area. Opposite, on a sunken level, a 13-metre lounge space has been established which, furnished with carpet and orange sofas, provides the perfect place for relaxing conversations while contemplating those enjoying the pool.

Perhaps because of the unusual shapes and colours used, the Studio Doherty team refers to the ensuite bathroom in the master bedroom as their favourite space.
