From its base to its interior composition, José Luís Barbosa has designed a house that could provide a city refuge for artists, designers, poets and philosophers.
It is only the width of Rua Castilho, in Lisbon, that separates this 1959 building from Eduardo VII Park. In fact, inside the apartment, the serenity transmitted by the green landscape is continued, evading the hustle and bustle of city life. “One has to succumb to the inevitability of using modernising materials “, explains José Luís Barbosa, who as both the owner and responsible for the interior project, undertook the restructuring of these 170m2, installing double-glazing and the sound-proofing of noise between rooms.
These choices didn’t allow for the original typology of the apartment to be completely preserved, leading to the demolition of some walls, alterations to the ceilings and the introduction of sliding doors in order to create a greater sense of space. Taking advantage of the east-west alignment of the home, spotlighting was strategically installed – among them the lamps focused on the dining table, designed by the owner himself – contrasting with the restrained tones that cover the walls and the solid wood floor.

As soon as we arrive, we feel an atmosphere of pure poetry, which does justice to the collector’s discoveries. In the openplan dining room and living room, we are carried back to the 1970s with ethnic influences that manifest themselves in the connections between contemporary art, fashion and literature. This same coherence flows between the two bedrooms, library and the study, where several pieces of art dominate our vision, such as masks used in rituals, the baptismal font, in Romanesque stone, and sculptures by Nicoloff and António Bolota.
