On the western bank of Luxor, set among the mountains of Thebes, the aridity of the Valley of the Kings desert is suddenly broken by an unlikely oasis. Amidst a dense two-hectare palm grove, the architectural lines of the Al Moudira Hotel begin to reveal themselves as a natural extension of that place.
Conceived by Zeina Aboukheir, the project took two decades to come to fruition through the work of local builders and craftsmen, who erected the 54 suites, set around shaded courtyards and filled with antique furniture, frescoes and materials salvaged from historic homes throughout Egypt.
The interiors possess an almost theatrical richness, an aesthetic eclecticism that blends formal references from Egyptian, North African and Eastern architecture. This fusion of styles is evident in the juxtaposition of openwork wooden shutters, columns salvaged from forgotten buildings and Ottoman stained-glass windows that filter the light into a spectrum of colours.

Here, there are no empty frames: rather, there is a deeply heartfelt curation that is shared with every visitor.
