Some homes do more than merely organise space; they offer a sensory experience. In the prestigious Anfa Supérieur district of Casablanca, a 1976 residence has been reborn through the vision of Ali Lahlou. The founder of his eponymous studio has crafted a visual manifesto for a young couple, blending architectural heritage with a bold, creative spirit.
The brief was ambitious: to take a structure defined by minimalist lines and stripped-back architecture and infuse it with the classic allure of a Haussmann-style Parisian apartment, all while maintaining a vibrant, contemporary freshness.
Light serves as the narrative thread of this metamorphosis, specifically, the fleeting magic of dusk. Lahlou envisioned the interiors as a chromatic journey inspired by the sunset, where soft gradients of warm ochre and burnt orange dissolve into misty evening blues. Rather than relying on sharp contrasts, the palette flows through silent transitions that lend rhythm and depth to the home, ensuring that serenity and character reside in every corner.
Upon entering, one is met by a commanding central table in Calacatta marble, which anchors the flow of the house and evokes the refined air of a boutique hotel. From here, the eye is drawn to the elegance of the walnut herringbone flooring - a quintessential element that bridges European tradition with the project’s modern audacity. Against a backdrop of neutral walls, the furniture, almost entirely bespoke, takes centre stage. Plush velvets sit alongside enamelled glass tables, while a rainbow onyx bar stands out like a meticulously crafted piece of jewellery.
The residence unfolds through a series of tactile environments, from the library-style living room to a sun-drenched pergola. As the owners are keen art collectors, the understated walls allow their boldest pieces to punctuate the space with confidence. The result is a masterful balance of old and new, where inviting fireplaces and noble materials like marble and brass coexist with a sublime decorative sensibility.
Completed in a remarkable six months to coincide with the couple's wedding, this wholesale renovation was more than just an exercise in aesthetics; it was an act of intimacy. Ali Lahlou has succeeded in creating a setting that is simultaneously a stage for creative expression and a sanctuary of calm. In Casablanca, amidst the rustle of tree-lined streets and the glow of the setting sun, lies a home with a Parisian soul and a heart turned toward the horizon.
