Painter, sculptor, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and play-wright. Pablo Picasso was known for the multidisciplinary nature of his art, as well as for the many relationships he had. However, among the women in his life, there is one who stands out in particular: Jacqueline Roque, his second wife, elevated to status of muse, with whom he enjoyed a 12-year marriage, during which he rendered her in some 400 portraits.
Although she died in 1986, Roque continues to be a source of inspiration, as proven by this maximalist restaurant located in Barcelona’s Eixample neighbourhood, designed by Eva Longoria, leader of the Rockwell Group studio in Madrid.
Jacqueline’s portraits provide the inspiration, and on the three floors that make up the establishment the portraits are featured in environments that blend Art Nouveau details with the spontaneous and surreal forms of Picasso’s works of art.
The ground floor draws inspiration from the 1955 portrait Woman in Turkish Costume in a Chair, where Jacqueline is portrayed as “a woman of the harem”, wearing an odalisque costume whose reds, yellows and blues are mirrored in the Turkish-influenced interiors.
