Nestled atop the Eola Hills near Salem, Oregon, this home offers views of the mountains and city to the east and rolling hills and wine country to the west. The house seems to be on top of the world when low clouds descend over the valley in the morning.
The path takes a kilometre-and-a-half long road, with curves and brief views of the mountains, hills and the house that appears at each new turn. Upon arrival, a garden with a water fountain made from local stones formally announces the change from professional to family life.

The client's brief was simple: to create a comfortable family home that would take advantage of the site's spectacular views and serve as a retreat from working life, a place that could be the perfect balance between rest, comfort, functionality and durability.

Inspired by Japanese culture, the home's design emphasizes indoor-outdoor relationships and framed views. The entrance is a simple, minimalist space and, walking through the foyer to the east, we are overwhelmed by the unique views of the mountains. The house's focal point is the combination of living, dining and kitchen, transforming that space into the perfect place to enjoy country life with family and friends. The west side of this central space includes a lounge with sliding doors that, once opened, make the boundary between indoors and outdoors disappear.

On the upper floor, we find the bedrooms. Unlike the high ceilings on the main level, relatively low ceilings create a cosy private space. The narrow hallway leads to a large open mezzanine area above the living/dining room, and another hallway leads to the terrace with 270-degree views. The covered rooftop deck with a fireplace provides comfortable lounging space in all seasons. The basement has a wine room, sauna, media room, and fitness and games room.
