Inspired by the architecture of mid-20th century California, this countryside retreat in the Cotswolds offers us an idyllic narrative, recounted here by Alexandra Novo. Enveloped in a functional language and woven into layers of textures and styles, it has resulted in an original reinterpretation of an English country house.
It was no coincidence that the owners turned to the interior design firm Maddux Creative. After previously having worked together on several projects, Scott Maddux and Jo leGleud were the obvious choice to redesign this weekend retreta for this English family with two children. Finally, the exercise in creativity and audacity becomes apparent, framing a portrait of the lives and personalities of its inhabitants.
The possibilities offered by the architectural structure of the old barn were extraordinary and highlighted numerous references to California modernist architecture, in particular the woodwork, the volumetry, the wide spaces, the large openings to the outside and the imposing double-sided stone fireplace. A local architect and carpenter shaped the volume, framing it in a modern language, keeping only the footprint of the structure and the roof and creating large floor-to ceiling windows. Light and landscape soon filled the interior, and the slatted wooden ceiling projected an immediate sense of cosiness and hospitality.

Light, colour and textures define the emotional patchwork, paying tribute to the charming landscape of the Cotswolds now illuminated by an imagined Californian sun.
