La Maison au gré des saisons (The House of the Seasons) is the new project by Le Local Design studio in collaboration with La Roche Posée Landscapers. Based on an ecological and sustainable philosophy, this house blends the old and the modern in the heart of nature.
Located in Sutton, Quebec, La Maison au gré des saisons was designed by Rebecca Bourque, founder of Le Local Design and owner of the house, and her partner and husband. This project reflects the environment and nature surrounding it, based on eco-friendly principles. While designing and building the property, the designers recovered, reused and reinvented different objects: many pieces of furniture and lighting were recovered or handmade from recycled materials as well as the garden.
'Each element that we recover, reinvent, or refuse for new purposes tells a story and gives a soul to the house. For us, the gathering of these finds is a kind of artistic creation that has been ongoing for several years', explains Rebecca.
The entire project is characterised by nature. Clad in cedar shingles and shou sugi ban - carbonised wood that uses an ancient Japanese technique that gives the material a unique tone and texture - the house brings together different raw materials, preserving the spirit of the forest and integrating it closely into its environment. On the ground floor, the raw, natural look of the polished concrete floor contrasts with the prominent presence of light wood throughout the house and the glass and black steel partitions that delimit the interior from the exterior.
Throughout the day, the rooms are flooded with natural light through the large windows that characterise the 'house of the seasons'. To frame the surrounding landscape, Rebecca and her husband chose the placement of these openings to the outside in detail.
Facing southwest, the main living room extends into the forest, allowing daily contemplation of the wildlife and flora. 'At certain times of the year, the water from the adjacent pool reflects the light of the setting sun, creating a dance of orange hues on the wooden ceiling', notes the designer. 'It's soft and magical'.
Alone on the upper floor, the couple conceived the main bedroom as their 'intimate cocoon'. Accessible via a spiral staircase, this space includes a bathroom and a shower that can also serve as a steam room. The children's area and a games room are on the ground floor, with an impressive view of nature.
For Rebecca and her partner, La Maison au gré des saisons reflects their identity and businesses, Le Local Design and La Roche Posée Landscapers.
