Right in the heart of Montreal, an old duplex has been converted into a contemporary family home. The project was designed by Thellend Fortin Architects.
With its distinctive architectural style, the famous Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood is the new address for Saint-André no. 3 project - a former duplex transformed into a single-family home. "The concept of this residence was developed according to a simple spatial organization of served spaces and serving spaces which are arranged in a parallel manner," explains the architects Louis Thellend and Lisa-Marie Fortin.

On the rear façade, a play of geometric shapes fits into the framework of the elevation of the building next door, designed by the same team of architects for the same family in the previous decade. This correspondence creates a fluid dialogue, using different openings to form a united and coherent whole.

The Thellend Fortin Architects team opted for white tones combined with light oak wood for the colour palette. This project aimed to create an ethereal and luminous environment to balance out the narrow width of the space. Throughout the day, the sun's rays enter through the large windows and light up the different textures and materials.

At the centre of the project is a staircase, which folds and unfolds in the space, connecting the various floors - from the basement to the mezzanine. Conceived as a free-standing element, the materials chosen, in contrast with the soft colours of the surrounding environment, highlight this central piece and accentuate its presence. At the top of the stairs, the skylights provide a bath of natural light to all the spaces.
