After centuries of transformation, this house continues to defy time. This renovation, developed by the Wonderstruck studio in collaboration with BNLA Architecten, honouring its essence through an approach where the subtlety of the materials and the precision of the details are the main characters.
Built in 1656 by the merchant Nicolaes Blaeuhelm, and influenced by the architect Philips Vingboons, the Monumental Canal House evokes the classic narrow typology of the canal houses built during the Golden Age of the Netherlands. It has undergone several transformations over the centuries, including a significant reconstruction in 1907 which, despite modifying its structure, preserved the memory of marble, stained glass and staircases that echoed stories from bygone times.
During the renovation carried out by Wonderstruck, in collaboration with BNLA Architecten, no rules were imposed on the space. The aim was to capture its essence, discover its pulse and restore its breathing and harmony. It was thanks to this architectural and emotional heritage that the basis for a new chapter was found.
With the extraordinary challenge of preserving the monumental character of the property in compliance with the requirements of the Heritage Committee, meticulous work was needed to restore the ornamental elements, while also instilling a contemporary narrative through the careful selection of materials and design pieces.

Today, this five-storey residence maintains the spirit of its origins. Each floor is a chapter in an architectural novel.
