With a natural affinity to the drama and the mise-en-scène that runs through the work of Greg Natale, Deco Dynasty is a reflection of an evocative creative moment with a deep sense of narrative. The designer has used a theatrical colour palette to achieve a sumptuous and sensual grandeur in this project.
A minimalist penthouse is dressed up in pink, with the shimmering glow of brass, immersed in a dramatic, open-plan architectural line. Inspired by the interiors he fantasised about as a child Greg Natale recalls, among many others, Alexis Carrington’s house from the American series Dynasty, with its art deco touches and unmistakable Hollywood ambience. The idea of voyeurism, idealising the inside of other people’s houses, the way they live and their favoured style, allows us to imagine a world on the edge between fiction and reality — inspiration for the initiation of this project.
In a tribute to the opulence of the 1980s, the designer plays with volumes, geometry and colour. Toorak Penthouse — the original name of the project — was given the name of Deco Dynasty when it was published in the book The Layered Interior (suggestion in our Books section page 109), to reflect the early inspiration and sparkling character of this residence.
With his very distinctive style, Greg designed an apartment for a modern couple, with a three-year-old son, who are the owners of a luxury watch and jewellery store and who wanted to transform a minimalist space into an exuberant home. Originally designed by a designer from Melbourne, whose signature focus was on clean interiors, the couple was looking for something a little more playful, represented by the layering of colour and configuration of areas, with a maximised energy and brightness, as a reflection of their personalities.

“It’s not necessarily a ‘forever’ home — the clients are young, energetic and fashionable — but it reflects the way they want to live now and the feeling of grandeur, elegance and vibrancy they want their home to express.”
