At the heart of Macau, Asia’s most popular entertainment destination, we uncover one of the most recent and extravagant projects by Zaha Hadid Architects. Although we might not be surprised at seeing the usual megalomaniac style of the architect, we are rapidly seduced by the undeniable grandeur of this project.

Located inside the City of Dreams resort, a leading integrated resort in Macau that includes casino, two theatres, shopping district, 20 restaurants and four hotels, the new flagship hotel Morpheus just opened its doors on the 15th June 2018. Linked at ground level with the surrounding three-storey podium, the hotel houses 770 guest rooms, suites and sky villas, but also civic spaces, meeting and event facilities, gaming rooms, lobby atrium, restaurants, spa and rooftop pool.

ZHA designed the Morpheus as a simple extrusion of the existing abandoned foundations, that were already in place of a condominium tower that did not progress. “This extrusion generated a monolithic block making best use its development envelope that is restricted to a 160m height by local planning codes, then ‘carved’ with voids. Three horizontal vortices generate the voids through the building and define the hotel’s dramatic internal public spaces, creating unique corner suites with spectacular views”, explained the team.

The exuberance is felt all over the place - a serie of bridges create amazing spaces for the hotel’s restaurants, bars and guest lounges by renowned chefs like Alain Ducasse and Pierre Hermé, and twelve glass elevators provide guests remarkable views of the interior and exterior.

As Lawrence Ho, chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts said, “from the very beginning, we shared ZHA’s vision and determination to push boundaries. Morpheus offers a journey of the imagination. From the curved exterior to the dramatic interior spaces, it pleases the eye and excites the senses: a contemporary masterpiece to be enjoyed by many generations to come”.
