Located on an island in the Chinese city of Wenzhou, River Island Villa combines tranquillity and calm with an elegant and warm design. Inspired by its unique landscape, designer Ding Jilin conceived a comfortable and sophisticated home that is firmly connected to nature.
River Island Villa: the gateway to paradise. Surrounded by water and with breathtaking views of the mountains, this property is the latest project from the Jishang Space Design studio. With this project, Ding Jilin wanted to bring nature into the interior space, taking full advantage of the light and the surrounding landscape.
Stepping through the front door, residents are invited to slow down and absorb the peaceful energy of the house. In the entrance hall, the oak flooring and wood-panelled walls unfold and lead the eye to the remaining rooms, creating a natural feeling of comfort.
Tall, narrow windows offer incredible views of the landscape softening the barrier between inside and out. At the same time, through the design of each room and the different combinations of materials the space retains its clear and concise character allowing residents to concentrate on everyday life inside.
The Villa's structure gives the spaces multifunctionality, allowing light and the outside environment to flow into the house. The detailed design enables the rooms to alternate freely between open and closed.
Large windows illuminate the living room on the second floor with natural light. Residents can enjoy magnificent views of the river and mountains as if they were an extension of the living room itself. The spiral and scissor staircases that connect the different floors are not just functional elements but act as important visual points expressing the beauty of the structures and fluid lines, perfectly integrated into the space's layout and flexibility.
For the master bedroom, Ding Jilin designed an intimate and comfortable space to relax. The unadorned walls reflect soft sunlight, creating a contemplative atmosphere. The curtains add a smooth, subtle touch to the interior. Here, people are invited to put aside the complexity of everyday life and enjoy a moment of calm and tranquillity. The office and tea room play multiple roles in the villa's design: as practical and functional spaces, they also serve as places for leisure and culture.
Focusing on the entrance of natural light, the villa's layout serves as a practical tool and a conduit for spiritual sustenance. Thus, skylights at strategic points in the house allow light and air to circulate and create a sense of visual richness and closeness to nature.
The basement, which is open space and clad in micro-cement, is equipped with a gym, a bar, and a lounge area. A large skylight in this space receives natural light, improving the room's brightness and creating a comfortable and cosy atmosphere.
The outdoor patio has a distinctive design from the villa's interior. More sophisticated, this area features modern lines, recessed lighting and some vegetation that comes to life around a fire pit.
With fast-paced and stressful lifestyles, people are increasingly looking for environments where they can slow down, relax and feel closer to nature. The designer responsible for the project has responded to this desire by creating different open and interconnected spaces that fulfil the needs of a modern family.
