Balancing between historic references and avant-garde details
A true 'petit grand café' in the heart of Ghent, Belgium. When the renovation of this well-known and almost untouchable value in the old part of this medieval town started, the owners took the opportunity to create something timeless. Supported by these three young hospitality entrepreneurs who spoke the fortunate words ‘carte blanche’, the café was designed by a complementary design team. An all-female crew, in design, elaboration, site management and styling. Altu, an office for architecture, interior and scenographic design; and Studio Stories, specialists in creative direction and styling. The result is a welcoming café - intimate by day, buzzing by night - with Parisian details and Milanese grandeur but with the easy-going mentality of the local inhabitants of Ghent.

It's the simple things in life : a comfortable chair, good music and the assurance of something tasty to eat and drink. The natural leather built-in sofas with deep warm dark mahogany wood bring instant cosiness during cold winter evenings but also refreshment on hot summer nights, when the wall-wide guillotine windows are fully opened. The 'Open late' sign on the doors (which are more open than closed), mark the café's 'everyone welcome anytime vibe' and connect the indoor spaces with the large terrace outside.

At café ’t Kanon, the devil is in the details. But nevertheless, when you enter, you are welcomed unpretentiously. After all, a café promises conviviality. It is a simple experience, and if the setting is right, the day flows into the night without complicating things. La charme de la table c'est de si trouver. But when the warm wooden tables are covered with soft, deep-blue leather, the conversation and the wine just flow easier.

A new central horseshoe-shaped bar and wooden ceiling enter into a spatial dialogue with the original curved façade. It subtly divides the space into two cosy seating areas. The shape creates a buzz behind the bar, where staff prepare the drinks and stir the signature cocktails.

Balancing between historical references and avant-garde details, the new interior aims to be timeless. The established value that the old Café 't Kanon was and the new 2021 version go hand in hand. The old terrazzo floors and glass windows have been carefully restored and complemented by warm mahogany walls and ceilings that recall the old iconic bars of the 50s; while the hand-polished metal, mirror and glass details bring a futuristic touch and even a sense of movement and shimmering spaciousness. Even in the bathroom, an old ceramic sink and funky glass lamps from the 70s find their place alongside eclectic marble tiles. All with a subtle streak of light around the bar and vintage lamps that reference the cannonball. Tout feu tout flamme.

"Something new, something exciting, an opening with a bang.”

TEAM - Altu x Studio Stories
Petit grand café 't Kanon was designed by a complementary design team : an all-female crew, in design, development, site management and styling. Altu, an office for architecture, interior and scenographic design; and Studio Stories, specialists in creative direction and styling. Having worked together before, their paths naturally crossed again at café 't Kanon.

Jumping into a new adventure during the lockdown in their beloved city of Ghent, they relived their love for aesthetics, interior design, hospitality and simply bringing people together. Supported by the owners, who spoke the happy words 'carte blanche', it all flowed together quite easily.

TEAM - ’t Kanon
After 35 years of ownership, it was time for the iconic duo Nadia & Gerard to press the pause button. Three born and bred lovers of food and drink in Ghent joined forces to give the neighbourhood bar a new look. Steven Desmedt, Ahmed El-Saidy & Jules Gahide created a no-nonsense petit grand café : great products - local finds mixed with established names -, friendly faces and just the right amount of fun. 'Open daily 2 pm till late' and with a large terrace where it is easy to fill a day just by watching the endless stream of city strollers pass by, café 't Kanon meets all the requirements of a 'big city café'.

This was not a step into the unknown for the trio, who can be linked to several other hospitality endeavours.

FOOD & DRINKS - The Menu
The food and drink menu is created with a genuine love of the Parisian café scene. A bit cocky, unique and always on the lookout for good products. At 't Kanon product is everything. Why serve mediocre wines when you have an abundance of good juice? Why offer unhealthy snacks when you can work with local, well-made & nutritious ingredients?

Petit grand café 't Kanon wants to be the place where you discover new creations after enjoying the classics. Old and new in perfect harmony, just as the renovation of the building and the concept were tackled.

"Cheers to the moments that have already happened and the celebrations that are yet to happen."
