The neutral tones, the subtle decoration and a sense of minimalist define the interiors of this residence from the 1980s. In fact, the apartment “shared some of the issues that characterize many buildings of that time, such as the conflict between spaces and structure, unsatisfactory insulation, dysfunctional organization, and inappropriate solar orientation, among other aspects,” explain José Andrade Rocha and Filipe Ferreira, co-founding partners of the Portuguese office Arriba, about this project in Lisbon, completed in 2018.

“We aimed to blend structure and architecture, and to reduce compartments and circulation”, they reveal. The answer would end up taking shape trough the creation of wider areas and lightweight materials, where the kitchen becomes the central element of the apartment, around which the house is organized. “It merges with the living room, from where one can access the previously closed balcony, now opened towards the river.”

All over the 100 square meters of the apartment, a sober decoration is combined with plants and the pureness of materials, giving us that much-needed tranquility, in the middle of the frenetic Portuguese capital.
