A stony desert, a beaten earth track, a small Berber village, an old adobe Kasbah and earthen wall. There are no names or signs. 20km out of Marrakech we find what appears to be the Berber Lodge.

At the entrance, on the dimly lit terracotta walls, wood and ceramic pieces stand out; minimalism, utter elegance and a strong presence of the earth. Nina Simone can be heard playing somewhere. We anticipated a certain experience and the entire promise was fulfilled. We are welcomed with a “thé à la menthe”, of the kind that only Morocco can provide. From the porch we look out on the olive grove, terraced gardens and the swimming pool. One breathes nature all around.

Jean Michelle Romain fell in love with this piece of land in the Berber village of Oumnas. An olive grove and gardens on two hectares of land with a view of the Atlas Mountains. An interior designer and responsible for other projects in Morocco, such as Bab Ourika, Riad Dar Tarabel and Café Nomade, he created the Berber Lodge in collaboration with his friends Karl and Olivier from Studio KO, which is known for its other projects in Marrakech such as the Yves St Laurent Museum and Café de La Poste.
