This ranch-style house is a unique blend of sophistication and charm, located in California's picturesque Los Olivos wine region. Nestled amidst serene vineyards, it offers a tranquil escape just three hours away from the bustling city of Los Angeles.
This residence is the perfect blend of rural charm and contemporary elegance. Embracing furniture-centric design, the spaces have been meticulously shaped around the tangled stone patterns. Combined with natural wood and cream-coloured stucco, the sombre black stone gives the house a modern charm.
Corinne Mathern, the interior designer, embarked on a journey to create a serene and inspiring home that would reflect the owners' personalities. The collaborative process involved incorporating the owners' designs, such as the lamp next to the blue Michael Taylor sofa and the coffee table in the living room, adding a personal touch to the space.
“My favorite photo is of the “powder room” that has an incredible carved rock sink that our client had made previously; we paired it with a simple, custom table and sconces to let it shine. I LOVE that room,” says Mathern.
The house's design was a testament to the owners' love for art and craftsmanship. Their collection of iconic furniture served as a rich source of inspiration for the design brief. This and Corinne Mathern's' spark' created a unique and inspiring space.

The house's colours are shades of natural wood, soft cream stucco, and layers of stone and dark black tiles, bringing a sense of sophistication and a modern aesthetic. An original sofa by Michael Taylor (an influential American interior designer of the mid-20th century) has been upholstered in a sky-blue Pierre Frey mohair, which turns out to be the only hint of colour introduced into the house.
