D114 is an apartment designed for friends of OM’s co-founders: it follows in the footsteps of D001, the studio’s very first project, also designed for the same friends.
In fact, the clients’ request was to completely rebuild the apartment. From D001, the furnishings were recovered but little remained of the original layout: only the old terrace, which has now become a small interior courtyard with a fireplace. The layout of the house originates from what is now the central axis, bare concrete pillars from which the apartment is split in two, open as a butterfly. Muted and organic colors, materials and silhouettes give this residence a warm atmosphere. An almost imperceptible overlapping of geometric patterns in different load-bearing elements of the house, such as walls and columns, make the simplicity of this project quietly refined.
Wood, in a single type of heat-treated oak, reigns as the protagonist. The room, larger and extended as a result of the expansion, needed warmth. Instead of expanding the space, OM created a slatted system, valuable in its construction and development, that tightens the space around it in the different rooms; OM compares the use of this system to the treatment of wool in a sweater. The aesthetic of the house remains clean and not overloaded with elements; those present, entirely custom-made by OM. A unique type was used for each material, maintaining visual consistency in the spaces. In the careful definition of ‘normal’ details, the house is almost reminiscent of a Swiss watch: its preciousness is found, precisely, in the system of slats that conceal and mark out useful elements, such as storage units, walk-in closets or sometimes new rooms. An elegant system concealing complex mechanisms and gears.
An extra detail: the shower with a view of the historic center of Vertova, a small village in the upper Bergamo area.
