Gifted with an uncommon sense of composition and spatial harmony, Laura Seppänen stamps her spaces with an elegance that is minimalist and timeless. In 2015, she launched her own design agency, creating “design spaces where people like to spend time and enjoy themselves”. Inspired by her trips abroad and design magazines, her refined sensibility lead to a passionate engagement with each new project. We talked to the Helsinki-based interior designer to find out more about her creative process.

What led you to found your studio in 2015? How many people are currently working with you?
Before launching my own design agency I worked as a freelancer journalist and assisting interior designer, so entrepreneurship was the next obvious step for me. I wanted to keep my creativity and visuality under my own name and that’s why I started my own company. Nowadays I have several helping hands to implement my visions.

What kind of services do you offer to your clients?
I create interiors for both public spaces and private homes. I personally love commercial styling projects, creative direction and developing concepts for different design companies.
How do you define the concept of your design practice?
Flexible and friendly boutique design agency, where the people and their story is the core. Every project is tailor made to suit the needs of the client. I always want to meet the customer personally and see the space beforehand if possible, before taking the project in. The most important thing is that I share the same passion for beauty and quality with the client.

In your opinion, what are the main ingredients for a great interior design?
I believe in the big picture where the larger surfaces meet the details and those two complete each other. I focus with the same enthusiasm whether its choosing the right floor or kitchen door knobs. Everything matters. Making less compromises means more great end results. The greatest outcome comes when the customer trusts the designer.

Where do you usually find inspiration in a daily basis?
I love to travel so most of my inspiration I get from my trips to abroad wandering around hotels, restaurants and other public spaces. Also following new brands, new design agencies and other designers is very inspiring. I read a lot foreign design magazines as well.

Do you have a favourite project, that you are particularly proud of?
Latest restaurant design for Kitchen & bar by Maannos is something that I’m personally very proud of. It’s my latest public space design and the customer was bold enough to execute my ideas in its entirety and I think that the outcome is harmonious and interesting.

What are you currently working on?
Currently I’m working on 3 residential projects and one office space, different styling projects and photoshoots for clients, couple 3D visualizations and one event production.

What is your ultimate goal when it comes to your work?
To create something that people find inspiring and design spaces where people like to spend time and enjoy themselves. Always happy to hear if customer finds something new and interesting whether it’s a home, restaurant, office, piece of furniture or nicely styled photograph.

Where in the world can we find Laura Seppänen?
You can find me here in Helsinki from Punavuori district, where I have my showroom in Merimiehenkatu. If I’m not in the studio, I must me somewhere in a nice restaurant in the neighborhood.
