This house is a calming respite for a young family in Manhattan's West Village. The project pays homage to the historical heritage of the "brownstone" so typical in the 1860s, finding a balance between natural materials and contemporary design.
And Studio, responsible for interior design, was inspired by modern Belgian interiors, integrated natural materials layers, warm textures including raw and antique woods, earthy-hued heavy Belgian linens, antique brass detailing, and Roman Clay wall texture into the project. Always working closely with the client, seeking to cultivate a space aligned with the client's vision, expectations and lifestyle, the designers also integrated some unique pieces, including antique stone fireplaces sourced from Europe, to add further dimension. And Studio also explored solutions that paired classic design and mindful functionality, such as a custom panel finished in Roman Clay to conceal electronics, offering elegant solutions without compromising the holistic design.
The neutral colour palette stands out, contrasting with the unfinished and aged raw wood, linen and natural textures. Warm woods, plaster and marble age beautifully over time and become rich.
"I would say Axel Vervoordt was an inspiration as well as Vincent Van Duysen, two designers who are deeply rooted in "Modern Belgian Style", says Arianna De Gasperis, the founder of And Studio.
