“Casa da Eira” is a rehabilitation project with around 650m² of built area, divided into three constructions on a plot of 2070m² in Cascais.
The project transforms this building complex, which has been built over the years following the slope of the land and merging with the existing rocky outcrops, into a home for a family undergoing a change of lifestyle.

The main challenge was to find a balance between the essence of the built spaces, where respect for space and the surroundings, for framing the spans and scale of the volumes was notorious, and adding greater comfort, responding to the wishes of the new family.

The work focused on giving a uniform reading to the various spaces, using continuous materials and maintaining a rustic language of irregular surfaces. Terracotta floors were extended in the social areas, a single darkened wood was proposed for the bedrooms floors and in the sanitary facilities, monomasses in neutral colors were proposed in conjunction with wood. The comfort of the house was increased with the introduction of heated floors, thermal insulation, recovery of fireplaces and salamanders, renovation of windows and total requalification of the water areas.

Functionally, the organization underwent only a few adjustments. This is centered on the entrance hall of the house that opens onto the imposing pink granite stones, with a small elevated library. This space acts as a link between the various levels of the house. From here you go down to the social area of the house, accessing the living room, marked by the lowered fireplace, its wide ceiling height with wooden trellises and which culminates in a large balcony. At an intermediate level, the kitchen is developed. The greatest confrontation between the pre-existing rustic elements and a modern kitchen, takes place here. The new elements were chosen in dark gray, emphasizing the wooden elements, the terracotta and the old doors. From the hall you can still go up to what was once an apartment and where the work was more profound. This floor was transformed into the master suite due to its privileged position, possibility of independent operation and taking advantage of the balcony over the entrance overlooking the sea. In this suite, a wide view of the space was sought, which resulted in greater permeability between the dressing, sleeping and bathroom areas. The remaining rooms appear at the various ends of the house. Each room was understood as unique and an effort was made to enhance its singularities, from the oculus for the view, the room in the highest part of the house that enjoys a vast opening to the valley or the room/workshop in the most secluded area of the land.

Outside, at an intermediate level, taking advantage of the rocky wall, there is a building that has been turned into an office. At the entrance, the guest house was rehabilitated and a storage and laundry space was introduced.

In the garden, the pathways were reconfigured with paired stone walls and rustic stone pavement. In the permanence areas gravel or terracotta pavement was used, like next to the swimming pool the same way as for the rest of the house, and local vegetation was favored with greater concern for the management of resources.

This project was created by the LC.SR architecture studio, formed by the architects Luisa Carp and Susana Ramos.
