Located in Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel in Azores, the new Contemporary Arts Centre brings a new platform to promote the arts in that region.
The architecture project was developed by studio Menos é Mais in partnership with the architect João Mendes Ribeiro. The intervention encompasses the design of new buildings, but also the renovation of the existing ones.
The project's main feature is the connection between the previous buildings, of an old factory, and the new construction, that includes a cultural centre and a concert hall, among other services. The pre-existent industrial buildings are built with volcanic stone, and are therefore reminders of a specific historical period. The new buildings present an abstract form, free from any particular characteristic style, and therefore are able to fit perfectly with its surrounding.
The Arquipélago Contemporary Arts Centre will officially open tomorrow, 29 March 2015.
