Coming from San Sebastián, we leave the coastal city behind us and head for the North side of Mount Igueldo, facing the Cantabric Sea, where the Akelarre Hotel rises imposingly.

The subtle integration of context and innovation defines this impressive work designed by Madrid-based architectural studio Mecanismo, taking advantage of mountainous location and diverse atmosphere. The practice spearheaded this unique project with a specific vision in mind: to combine the “innovation of Akelarre’s with the conceptual design and dedication that defines Mecanismo as a whole.”

As a result, out of this ambitious project would emerge twenty-two rooms, located inside five stone-clad cubes and spread across two levels, all of them oriented to the sea. But there’s more: the hotel hosts the famous three Michelin star Akelarre restaurant, a mandatory destination for every food lover in San Sebastián. After receiving its third star in 2007, the restaurant offers unforgettable meals conceived by chef and owner Pedro Subijana.

On the upper level, the team decided to include curvaceous terraces, offering stunning views to the horizon, connected to the hotel’s public areas through decked walkways. At the end of the day, pop into the Oteiza bar and a signature cocktail, while enjoying the sunset. Make the most of the moments of utter tranquility and visit the wellness space, with an exceptional luxury swimming pool in stone, sauna and Turkish bath.
