Set in San Francisco Bay Area, surrounded by 80-foot-tall oak trees, this family home showcases an extreme sensibility evident in the balancing of shape and scale, as well as the tactile presence of materials and textures. By blending the clients’ traditional and contemporary tastes, the project brings together a neutral colour palette and different materials such as cedar, concrete, and metal. There’s an interior visual harmony that is in communion with the landscape outside and can be felt in every room, from the mudroom with cubbies to the casual areas for living, dining and cooking, adjacent to the pool and terrace.

“Almost every piece of furniture has an angle or slope, but more natural shapes - such as the curvy chair legs or pebble-shaped poufs - bring in some softness”, adds David Oldroyd from ODADA. A philosophy that is expressed through design solutions such as stained wood plank doors installed in painted frames with textural bronze hardware; the gray limestone floors combined with warm walnut planks or the wall covered in grayed white, to enhance its feeling of modernity.

A property that appears to go on forever and reconciles historic context, functionality, building constraints, and a perfect connection between indoors and outdoors. “Closer to the house, the hardscape and plantings reflect the house architectural shapes - more linear. As you move further, into the oak woodland, they get wilder”, explains landscape designer Bernard Trainor.
