A new buddhist shrine was born in the city of Tangshan, in China’s Hebei province. The project, conceived by Beijing-based Archstudio, is located in a forest by the riverside, around a mound, where all the trees have been maintained.

“The design started from the connection between the building and the nature”, explained the practice, that’s why the team decided to create five independent spaces guided by two axes - one going north-south and the other along the river. The entrance, a Buddhist meditation room, a team room, a living room and a bathroom, create a fluid experience and invite guests to follow a sequence, after walking through a narrow path.

The shrine is against the wall and facing the water, while the tea room opens completely to the pool which is filled with lotus. “The building adopts the method of earthing to hide it under the earth mound while presenting the divine temperament of nature flowing interior space”, added Archstudio. But there’s also a connection to nature in the building’s materials - pine wood was used for the concrete formwork and built-in-furniture is custom-made with wood strips, whose grey wood grain is a little bit different from the concrete walls.

The result is a naturalistic and minimal structure, that inspire guest to feel and coexist with nature, and to find “its charm, even in an ordinary rural landscape”.
